Christmas 2015  Welcome to our Sunday School!

Exhibition of the Christmas cribs in Sunday school

There is a great old tradition to decorate a Christmas crib (“Vertep”) in the house before the celebration of the Christmas. The word “vertep” derives from Old Slavonic language and translates as “a cave”. Traditionally, this was the name of the cave where Christ was born.

The verteps were popular in Russia before the Revolution. Nowadays, this tradition revives. Vertep is a 3D model of the cave of Bethlehem with the puppets inside. Some people buy verteps in the stores or at the Christmas fairs, some people prefer to craft them by themselves. In Europe this tradition has been popular for many centuries.

There are different kinds of verteps. In those verteps which people have in their houses you may see the figures of newborn Christ, Virgin Mary, Joseph, angels, shepherds, the Wise Men and animals. The vertep in the Church is made of evergreens and it looks like a tent. It is set above the Holiday Christmas icon, so that everyone who bows before the icon appears to be inside of the Christmas cave.

These days in our Sunday school in the name of Sts. Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril & Methodius we have an exhibition of the Christmas verteps. All the models are handcrafted by our pupils. Children crafted verteps of regular paper, hard paper, papier-mache, fabric and other materials using paints, sparklers, beads, glitter paints and other creative resources.

Our children were trying their best to make the visitors happy! We will be glad if you visit our wonderful exhibition! We are looking forward to seeing you!

Charity Christmas Fair in Sunday school

On January 11th, 2015 in the School room of the Church house along with the children's Christmas tree celebration there was a Charity Fair of Sunday School. There were beautiful crafts and souvenirs handmade by our children, their parents and our parishioners. Everybody enjoyed looking at these amazing gifts and then bought them with pleasure. The donations will go to the remodeling and improvement of the school rooms for our children. This Fair had a great success! A good sum of money was raised, and even our Rector Fr. Lubomir added his donation to the School treasury for good measure!

We still have a lot of crafts, toys and decorations. We invite everybody to attend our Christmas Fair in the school room of the Church house. The room will be open every Sunday after the Divine Liturgy from 1 pm to 2 pm. You may help our school by purchasing these gifts!
